Following the lead of major companies like Microsoft and Nike, Starbucks has just come out in favor of gay marriage. A statement released by Starbucks reads as follows:
"This important legislation is aligned with Starbucks' business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners," the statement read.
I’d like to be a little more optimistic about this news, but I know that moves like this are usually more around making money than doing the right thing. No one wants to alienate potential customers, so Starbucks has to base its morals around the bottom line. Corporations only care about revenue. Except for Seattle’s Best. Those guys really stick to their guns. In fact I went into one of their stores the other day and was surprised to find a whole line of anti-gay coffees and soft drinks. I have to say, their God Hates Fags Latte was pretty tasty. While I disagree vehemently with the exclusion of any group, sometimes a nice queer-hating latte really hits the spot on a cold winter morning. The No Homo Caramel Frappe is pretty good, too. Come to think of it, I’ve never had a homophobic coffee that wasn’t delicious. But hey, good for Starbucks.
