Some members of the Sikh religion are angry at Jay Leno because of a joke he made on his talk show. Here’s an explanation from CNN. Presumably they explained it while doing the Jay Leno voice, cause that’s what everyone does when they’re talking about Jay Leno.
On January 19, the show aired images of each GOP candidate’s home during Leno’s monologue. When it came to Mitt Romney, however, the image of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, India was shown as his summer home, possibly to mock the extent of Romney’s wealth.
As a result, the Sikh community is none too pleased with Leno, and his quip has led to the creation of an online petition at change.org asking Leno and NBC to “stop defaming Sikhs and using derogatory remarks against the Sikh shrines.”
This outrage has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with a few nutjobs. I know this because I’ve been around long enough to know that religion doesn’t determine someone’s sense of humor. I’ve found it barely has an influence. I’ve met some super-religious people who have a great sense of humor, and I’ve met atheists who are complete stiffs. This is about a handful of individuals who have no sense of humor, who believe that they will get their way if they just whine the loudest. It’s appalling to a sensible man like me. Why do we let a small group of people who don’t represent the general public constantly determine our society’s direction? That would be like if we let the 1% of richest people make all of our laws. OK, bad example. It’s more like if we let a few select athletes have their way and determine which 3 cities would get to have winning basketball teams. Alright, maybe that’s not a great example either. It’s like if you’d never met a person who liked Jay Leno, yet we still gave him the most coveted show on television. Wait… dammit… that’s no good either. What is wrong with our country?
